Through your communications with me I know several of you use both Windows and Linux. I thought I would post a few answers to questions you have posed (paraphrased of course)…
What OS do you use most? – “Most” hmm…OK it’s like this…
-I use Windows Server 2003 (because I got it ‘free’ as part of the MS Action Pack program) for a file and print server (3 printers).
-I use Ubuntu 7.04 on my workhorse computer (email, web surfing, etc.). It’s stable and secure.
-On my main rig I use XP, Vista, and openSUSE 10.2. Under openSUSE I do 90% of my music work, 90% of my blogging and writing, and 99% of getting my geek on.
-I use XP mostly for picture work and for research and testing XP and apps, I use Vista only for researching and testing Vista and apps ( I REALLY don’t like Vista).
-My laptop boots XP, Vista, and Ubuntu 7.04 but I spend most of my time in Ubuntu.
-My wife uses XP.
-I don’t play many computer games anymore, they bore me.
Hope that answers that.
Your site is mostly about Windows, why do you use Linux?
Hehe – that one almost answers itself!
I’ve mostly used Windows in the past. I have done job related (still do it as a side-job) computer work on Windows 95-ME, NT4, Windows 2000, XP, Vista, Server 2k, 2k3. I never see the problems in Linux I’ve encountered with Windows over the years.
1 – I’m a Geek and am kinda bored with Windows, l need new things to play with. I have fun with Linux (told ya I was a Geek).
2 – I’m sick and tired of forking out a crap load of money for software and software updates.
3 – Viruses & Spyware ( and see point 2).
4 – I’ll reinstall when I feel like it and I don’t want to call MS and ask “may I please”.
5 – Speaking of reinstall, all the apps are either on the install CD/DVD or are a click away in the repos.
What is your favorite OS?
openSUSE (though I’m a little worried about its future).

Sorry, the comment form is closed at this time.

Some real superb linux distros are being released today. In the past, I always seem to come back to openSUSE. Everything I plug in, camera, printers, scanner & wireless just work. Looking fwd to trying openSUSE 10.3, PClinuxOS 2007 & Sabayon. I believe this may be they year I not only have hardware working good, but software as well. Software has matured to the point I’m hoping to completely replace windows including all video editing & everything. That will be one fun weekend!
Is it me or are the majority of “geeks” abandoning Microsoft…I’m seeing it all over the net and let’s see, a quick inventory of my geek friends finds that I am the only one still working with MS and I’m on XP still. Works for me. As for my geek friends, I have 3 that have moved to Apple, and the other 2 are using Linux. No Vista in sight. I’m starting to wonder if MS is in trouble. I always suspected that Bill Gates knew when it was time to leave MS…
I’m seeing that too…
I see that also. XP does work well for me too, but I am getting tired of all the “strings attatched” that is now coming with MS. People can tollorate quite a bit but their is a limit. With some of the recent events, practices and new costs to use MS, I believe that limit may have been exceeded…at least for most geeks and even a lot of IT people. Couple that with linux starting to work very well for even the average computer user & apple really making a PC fun and productive I can see why many people are switching. Competition is good for the marketplace!
Apple appears to be a huge winner going forward. I know you don’t like Apple but the Macbook is absolutely huge. Another convert is Mark Cuban: http://www.blogmaverick.com/2007/09/16/once-you-go-mac
My problem isn’t so much with Apple as it is with the Cult-of-Apple and of course its price. If I could actually afford a comparatively fast Mac for about the same cost I might even get one (though it really gripes me I can’t build one). I could dual-boot with Linux which would be just fine. At the end of the day I say use whatever works for you or whatever you enjoy.
