So here’s one thing I noticed with the Upgrade DVD. It seems that if it recognizes that the hard drive already has an OS on it, it won’t let you boot from the DVD. I removed the hard drive from the system, took it to another pc and reformatted it. Then reinstalled into my computer and started over and it boot from the DVD no problem. I didn’t have this issue with my Vista Upgrade DVD.

I’ve done 3 installs with the Upgrade version (Family Pack) and was able to boot from the DVD so I’ve no idea what the problem is. A google search came up with ideas ranging from ram configuration to bad optical drive. None of which seems to apply to your situation. Did you check your BIOS boot settings? It sounds like it is set to 1:HD 2:DVD and needs to be 1:DVD 2:HD.

Hi Eric, Yeah – Bios is set to boot DVD, external DVD, and then HD. I tried the internal DVD with my update disc and it seems to go straight to the hard drive. When I put my vista disc in, it boots straight off the vista dvd. When I take the hard drive out and reformat it and put it back in, only then does it seem to boot from the Windows 7 DVD. For everything else, it seems to boot from the dvd directly; XP, LINUX, VISTA. Something about my hardware BIOS and windows 7 disc incompatibility maybe.
