TweakHound Reviews - Plextor's PX-504A DVD Recorder ( Page 3 )

Test 4 - Full Music DVD

This is for my fellow audiophiles, many of whom hate compressed music files! Performed using Easy CD & DVD Creator 6 (classic).

Media: TDK 4X DVD+R

Backup: 4.31GB of .wav files. 9 FULL CD's! 13 min. 41 sec.

Test 5 - Video CD

Test performed with PhotoSuite 5 (not SE)

Media: Philips 700MB, 40X

Video CD:  363MB (pictures and MP3 background music) Burn Time: 3 min. 43 sec. Estimated total time: 15 min. Slow due to factors involved in processing and resizing photos.

Worked in other home computers, fully playable on my non-computer DVD player.

Music CD Copy

Test performed using Easy CD & DVD Creator 6 (disk copier).

Media: Memorex 700MB, 32X

Backup: Music CD, 3 min. 11 sec

*** A note on DVD media. 4X DVD+R media is new and was hard to find locally. After searching BestBuy, CompUSA, and Office Max, I finally found the last (or only?) box of 5 at Circuit City. A search online turned up better options.

Conclusion

The Plextor PX-504A lived up to it's hype. It's a fast, reliable drive worthy of Plextor's already solid reputation. I made no coasters! A must for the more expensive DVD disks. My only complaint would be the CDR/RW speeds. With drives knocking on 56X burning, 16X seems a little slow. However, one could argue that CD burning is an added bonus for a drive you are really buying for it's DVD capabilities. With the right software tools, some of which are provided, you can rip, burn, and backup massive amounts of data, music files, and video at high speed. What's not to love?

The Plextor PX-504A earns the TweakHound Editor's Choice Award!
