Programs For Backing Up Data Files In Windows XP

This article is part of Windows XP Backup Strategies For Home Users

Standard backup programs for XP are plentiful. These programs use a copy method for backups. Most include the ability to backup to a standard file, other computers, external drives, and removable media. They also include the ability to schedule backups. Many of these also include the ability to do advanced backup operations such as synchronizing. I won't be walking you through backing up and restoring. There are just too many programs to cover and most of the programs are exceedingly simple to use. Instead I'll just use this page to introduce you to several popular standard backup programs. Decide on where and how you want to backup. Make sure the program you choose can backup where you want it to. Often these programs have trial versions and it's a good idea to test them before you buy.

CD Burning Apps

Both Nero 7 Ultra Edition and Roxio Easy Media Creator 9 have the ability to make and schedule backups to CD/DVD. You can also always just burn a standard data disk with the info you wish to backup. Both are an excellent and cheap alternative for folks looking for a standard backup solution.

Backup Utility Programs

These offer the flexibility of backups to different types of media.

*Note that Acronis True Image 10.0 also includes these functions in addition to making images.

Backup Utility Programs

This list is by no means comprehensive. These are programs I'm at least vaguely familiar with. Their listing here does not constitute an endorsement. I'll list these programs in alphabetical order according to the vendor name. Prices listed are as of this writing (29JAN05).
