TweakHound Reviews - Plextor's PX-504A DVD Recorder ( Page 2 )

Down To Business:

RAM512mb generic PC2700
Hard Drive 20GB Maxtor (M), 100GB WD (S)
OSWinXP Home SP1

Test 1 - Norton Ghost

The first test was the something I've always wanted to do. Ghost a full XP install to 1 disk! Using Ghost from Norton SystemWorks Pro 2003 it was easy and quick:

Media: Verbatim 4X DVD+R

Backup: 3.1 gig partition: 17 min. 06 sec.

Restore: 3.1 gig partition: 13 min 07 sec.

Yaaaaaaahoooooooooo! You've no idea how cool that was for me! Bye Bye multiple CDR's!

Test 2 - Mixed backup

Test 2 was performed using Roxio Easy CD & DVD Creator 6 (classic). Flawless!

Media: TDK 4X  DVD+R

Backup: 4.28 GB ( pictures, files, programs, mp3's) 16 min. 03 seconds

Readable in DVD drive on separate computer too.

Test 3 - DVDXCopy

( TweakHound Recommended! )

Many of you have heard of DVDXCopy. It's a cool program that allows for full backup of your DVD movies. Due to the size of some movies it may require 2 DVD's to backup your movies (commercial DVD's can hold more data than the blank DVD's you can buy). However I haven't run into that yet. Not all movies can be backed up with the one click method but many can. I won't delve into the how's and why's further, I'll simply point you to where to get your questions answered. For DVDXCopy go to AfterDawn.com's DVDXCopy Central . For making playable videos of every type THE place to go is DVDRHelp.com. There will will find all your questions answered, compatible hardware and player lists, and links to every conceivable video related download.

First Movie

Media: TDK 4X DVD+R

Backup: Movie 4.33 GB (fit on 1 disk) Rip & Burn total, 21 min. 44 seconds.

Works in my non-computer DVD player.

Second Movie

Failed

This movie was the original Grinch (not the Jim Carrey fiasco). I'll try some of the tips from DVDRHelp later. If you've done it successfully, let me know before my nephew wears it out (or worse)!

Third Movie

Media: TDK 4X DVD+R

Backup: Movie 4.2 GB (fit on 1 disk) Rip & Burn total, 20 min. 09 seconds.

Works in my non-computer DVD player.
