Windows Vista Service Pack 1 Review
Paul Thurrott looks at Vista SP1.
Vista SP1 vs. XP SP2 – Benchmarked
ZDnet takes a crack at XP v. Vista. Part 1 & Part 2
So, onto conclusions. Looking at the data there’s only one conclusion that can be drawn – Windows XP SP2 is faster than Windows Vista SP1. End of story. Out of the fifteen tests carried out, XP SP2 beat Vista SP1 in eleven, Vista SP1 beat XP SP2 in two of the tests, and two of the tests resulted in a draw.
But, you didn’t really need yet more proof that XP is faster than Vista, did you???
Also there are alleged performance gains for XP SP3 coming.

Microsoft Security Bulletin Summary for February 2008
***For those who have installed SP1:
As far as I can tell the 9 updates that actually apply to Vista itself are already included in SP1 (by comparing the dates on the files, and 1 update is actually listed inside SP1).
(No, I am not 100% positive and the SP1 release notes haven’t been updated)

My Experience With Vista SP1 RTM
I’ll make this pretty short:
-2 machines
-Average install time 45 minutes.
-Problems / errors: Zero, zip, nada, none.
-Performance: No noticeable increase or decrease (see below). No benchmarks and none planned.
These were both upgrade installs. Both machines were already running a great many of the hotfixes beforehand. These machines are tweaked pretty good (and have UAC disabled).
I would like to hear the experiences of others who have installed Vista SP1 RTM.
(Please do not ask, or post where to get it. It is freely available all over the web. . If you can’t wait for MS to officially release it then hit up a forum or torrent.)
And as a side note, most of the versions I’ve seen available are in fact the real RTM.
These are the registry keys that you can look for to confirm it:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion]
“CurrentVersion”=”6.0”
“CurrentBuildNumber”=”6001”
“CurrentBuild”=”6001”
“SoftwareType”=”System”
“CurrentType”=”Multiprocessor Free”
“ProductName”=”Windows Vista (TM) Ultimate
“EditionID”=”Ultimate”
“BuildLab”=”6001.longhorn_rtm.080118-1840”
“BuildLabEx”=”6001.18000.x86fre.longhorn_rtm.080118-1840”
“CSDVersion”=”Service Pack 1”
