Any Small Engine Gurus Out There?

th

March 24, 2020, 11:07(EDT) By Eric (a.k.a. TweakHound)

I’ve got a generator that won’t start.

Changed gas.
Carb getting gas (pulled drain screw).
Will fire when starter fluid used.
Any ideas?

I assume you’ve Googled? If not, the most likely culprits:

Try using a can of that true fuel that they sell at the big box home repair stores for use in stubborn pressure washers, etc.
Works like a charm run it until that fuel runs out and then go back to whatever you were using.

Clean your carb with Barryman’s B12. Meaning taking it off the engine removing the gas bowl ang cleaning every office you can find.

I wouldn’t pull the carb unless I had a carb kit for it. there is diaphragm type gaskets that work like reed valves.I noticed it was dual fuel. if you have a full spare gas grill bottle and try it on propane. It is a much higher octane fuel and should help clean the carb w/o removing it. try a little starting fluid if it doesn’t start. you do have the propane hose and regulator ?

I just ordered a propane hose and regulator.
I’m gonna try and clean this carb and also order a backup straight from China via eBay. That is where the generator came from and seems to be the only place with a replacement.
This generator is the power backup for my house.

a new spark plug wouldn’t hurt. I was just looking at a repair manual trying to figure out the builder of the engine. i’m a retired hvac/electrician tech that grew up on the farm… we don’t live that far apart. looking at parts I found carbs on ebay w/propane diaphragm for 25 bucks . back during y2k I install several gens for the phone co relay substations and private homes. you should look into auto transfer switch. that way it’s parts you’ll need when get some solar panels and such…

      Thanks buddy. Ordered this one:

Spark plug is a good idea.
Had a manual switch installed when I moved here several years ago. I got the generator at Costco, again several years ago.

do you have a idea how many run time Hours that are on it. you need to check the gen brushs for wear . pay attention how they are removed there is a difference how they wear…more than likely it is the carb . bad gas will do major harm . if ordering parts go ahead and get a new one. I don’t recall the name of it right now but there are gas additives that will help keep gas good for a longer time…helps to use 92 octane too

consider getting a 100lb propane cylinder . when filled 80% will only weight about 90 lbs.manageable. no bad gas headaches again

Good idea. I may do that but I want the petrol functionality in case I need the extra power. There is a 700 running watts difference.

is there natural gas in your neighbor hood/home. I was surprised to see that much difference in power. propane is around 140 octane…need to up size 😉
