Windows 11 File Explorer Performance Issues

November 22, 2025, 10:26(EST) By Eric (a.k.a. TweakHound) Leave a Comment

Several sites have posted news that the latest Win11 preview build has a “tweak” to “fix” file explorer being slow.

The “fix” or tweak” is they are going to preload File Explorer in the background…
“We’re exploring preloading File Explorer in the background to help improve File Explorer launch performance. This shouldn’t be visible to you, outside of File Explorer hopefully launching faster when you need to use it. If you have the change, if needed there is an option you can uncheck to disable this called “Enable window preloading for faster launch times” in File Explorer’s Folder Options, under View.”
Great, another “feature” we are gonna have to disable. SMH. I swear that there isn’t anyone left in Redmond that gets it.

The comments about this are hysterical! At TechPowerUp for example:
“This’ll just take up more RAM space for no practical benefit.”
“Yep. It’s truly bewildering how badly it does perform. Like where are those CPU cycles going? WHERE?”
“Is it just me or every time there’s some news about Windows 11, it’s about it being bad or getting worse?”
or Reddit
“Yeah, let’s not fix the issue and rather hide it under the rug.”
“About as desirable as the Fast Startup feature that doesn’t actually shut your PC down but preserves whatever problems you’re having till you can come back to it later.”
“This is the opposite of a solution.”

I’m not having any real issue with file explorer.
I should note I have everything related to AI/Cortana/Bing/OneDrive disabled.
This registry tweak may help. It resets all Folder Views to General. This stops Windows from trying to decide how to display folder contents.
Copy the code below into notepad > Save it as a .reg file > double-click to run it.

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

; Explorer, Disable folder type detection
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\Bags\AllFolders\Shell]
"FolderType"="NotSpecified"

-END-
