DuckDuckGo, there’s an app for that! Android, iOS, Windows
Firefox gets a logo tweak. So does the Motorola logo.
AnandTech looks at 4 Haswell mobos. [H]ardOCP looks at one. Is Asus back on top?
Google wants in on the game console cash. They are also making a wristwatch (like Apple). I really don’t understand the watch thing. I haven’t worn one in many, many years. The time is on everything electric (TV, TV set-top box, computer, microwave, coffee maker, car radio, cell / smart phone, etc.). I’ve already got an Android phone.
I had a great beer from Blue Mountain Barrel House this week called Local Species. If you’re in to craft beers we have some great craft breweries here in Virginia. My favorites are:
Hardywood
Blue Mountain
Devil’s Backbone
Wild Wolf
If you are ever vacationing in Virginia, check out the Brew Ridge Trail!
No, I’m not making this next part up… I am really excited to try Beer Hound Brewery!!!!!!

You know that privacy software I mentioned yesterday? Apparently using some of it can make you a target.
There isn’t a 7-11 nearby. One of y’all eat some Chubby Hubby for me.
Software To Protect Your Privacy
The EFF has put together a site with software that is better suited to privacy protection.
PRISM-BREAK.ORG is something you will definately want to check out.
Interesting that they only list 6 Linux/UNIX alternatives. Something tells me folks will be yelling about that.

How-To-Geek has a neat article up: 15 System Tools You Don’t Have To Install on Windows Anymore
All this hoo-ha over government data mining has everyone taking sides and digging in. Even Woz has weighed in. (Poor guy can’t even sit in an airport without being pestered.) Honestly none of the “revelations” have surprised me though the number of people who are surprised by this has. Like many of you, I figured they were doing this crap all along. Cynical? Jaded? Yes. Yes I am.
I forgot to mention it last week but the guys [H]ardOCP seem to like this Haswell motherboard.
I enjoy watching Windows Weekly ( Leo Laporte, Mary Jo Foley, Paul Thurrott). This weeks episode is a good one.
I hope everyone has a great weekend!
Microsoft Tidbits
Apparently the next version of Windows (8.1?) will have a start button and allow you to default to desktop. Like it should have in the first place.
On the security side of things, Microsoft says we should be using anti-virus software. Who knew?
Speaking of security, Outlook.com now has 2-step verification among other things.
NewZon, Shopping For Geeks
There is a new browser extension backed buy the folks at [H]ardOCP whose purpose is to:
“Find and compare prices for Amazon technology products easily while shopping at Newegg using Chrome or FireFox.”
Looks pretty handy to me!

Some folks are whining about the usable storage space on the upcoming Surface Pro.

How-To Geek has a good article up: How to Protect Yourself From Java Security Problems if You Can’t Uninstall It
For years, Java has been the top source of browser exploits. Even after a recent emergency patch, Java is still vulnerable. To protect ourselves, we should assume that Java is always going to be vulnerable.

[H]ardOCP has a review of what looks to be a pretty decent mid-range motherboard.
[H]ardOCP – ASUS P8P67 Pro New B3 Revision Motherboard Review.
I’m digging the new look of their site too!
While this is not a super-inexpensive board, it really is not set up to be. It has a very solid feature set, a deep and easy to use UEFI BIOS for enthusiasts, and as you see is no slouch when it comes to overclocking.
