Windows 7 BSODs From Latest Updates

www_news

January 6, 2018, 09:17(EST) By Eric (a.k.a. TweakHound)

I few days ago I warned folks not to run Windows Update because of the possible dangers of the latest round of updates. One reader reported a BSOD here.
Over at AskWoody there is a post and running comment section full of reports of BSODs:
Multiple reports of blue screens (BSODs) 0X000000C4 when installing the January Win7 Monthly Rollup KB 4056894
“AMD machines are being pinpointed.”

I have autoupdate disabled on all my machines. 5 of my computers are running Windows 7. KB4056894 is only showing up on my laptop (Haswell). The rest of my Win7 PCs are Ivybridge or older. I’m not about to install this update.
As of yet none of my manufacturers have an update for Meltdown/Spectre.
I installed the latest update on my Win10 rig because I need to watch the effects so I can relay them to you.

My 86 yrs old relative called me about her problem: white text on black screen something like “trying to fix the boot”, already for a while. I advised her to force the PC close, and turn it back on. Then the same text was shortly seen, but PC then booted normally. Windows 7, automatic updates, Intel Core i3-2100, five yrs old PC. – So probably most users are lucky with this update.

I installed the update on i7-7700K Win7 64-bit system (with wufuc patch) and so far so good. I don’t sense any performance degradation. I did make true-image backup before installing patch, just in case.

Thanks Eric. If it wasn’t for your previous post I would probably have installed the update(s) and who knows what problems I would be experiencing.

I am watching these updates with great interest

Well thank goodness I didn’t get a BSOD from this. I have automatic updates disabled on my laptop but seems I forgot to disable them on my desktop, and I recently woke up to find my computer had restarted itself. Freakin’ hate that. And now to make things even better they’re pushing updates that are giving people BSODs. So cool.
