First Impressions – 2 New Samsung Galaxy S7’s
As I mentioned last week I ordered 2 new Samsung Galaxy S7’s (32GB). They were buy one get one free via rebate (BOGO). So, 2 for $672 or $336 each.
These phones replace my wife’s 4 year old iPhone 4S and my 3+ year old Motorola Droid Razr Maxx HD.
This isn’t a “review” just a tale of my experience so far. If you want a good review see:

Weekend Random Stuff…
Views for the Windows 7 Tweak Guide have spiked. Don’t know what that’s about.
Google Pixel 6, Yay or Nay?
My 5 1/2 year old Samsung Galaxy S7 is becoming harder to use. In the last few weeks at least 3 apps have become unstable/unusable. I’m not spending 1K x 2 on phones. You guys have any thoughts?

July 2021 Vacation Pics, Vids, And Info
Our vacation was July 5th -12th, 2021. We traveled from Virginia to Marquette, Michigan with stops at other Michigan locals along the way. We put about 2,700 miles on our vehicle.
This posts contains an image gallery and 3 videos. I used a GoPro Hero 8 and it was my first shot at that and mass video editing so cut me some slack.
This page is VERY large.

Just Setup My Blink Cameras
A got Blink cameras to monitor my Dad ( see My Dad Has Alzheimer’s – Gadgets, Gizmos, Etc.).
A few quick notes:
– It was the 5 camera setup
– The range of the Blinks did not reach across the house and down a floor. Fortunately I had 2 wifi routers and relocated one to the basement.
– Every unit has a friggin’ BRIGHT blue light that comes on when the camera is recording (XTs allow disable). Seriously, WTF? I found a video that shows how to take it apart and disable it. Screw that, I don’t have the time. As noted in the comments for the video you can stick a pin in and break the light. That’s exactly what I did. Very un-Geek of me I know.
– I put the Android app on 2 Samsung Galaxy S7s and an Amazon Fire tablet. They work OK.
– There is no official desktop app but there is an app out there called Bling Desktop. Works fine for viewing.

I am NOT liking the Blinks.
When I get a chance I will post why.

In post-massacre Vegas, security policies clash with privacy values

Caesars Palace not-so-Praetorian guards intimidate DEF CON goers with searches [Updated]
“For safety and security, hotel team members will enter rooms and perform a standard wellness check, even if you have opted out of housekeeping services, posted a sign on your door, or otherwise refused team member entry. You may be asked to leave the hotel, if you do not comply with this company policy,”
Blog Post from Marc Rogers “who leads DEF CON’s security team”.
“I do not support or endorse these room searches or how they are executed. I sympathize with the challenge these hotels are facing but believe they need to take a harder look at the efficiency, impact and long term cost of this strategy.
We MUST NOT let our hotels become like our airports. If we do, then the terrorists win.”
Everything you do outside your room is filmed in Vegas, I get that. But inside your room should be another story. I had money stolen out of my hotel room by the maid 20 plus years ago. I haven’t allowed housekeeping in my room since. You come in my room unannounced and we are going at it.
Blue light from phone screens accelerates blindness, study finds
“Scientists say they have found how blue light from smartphones, laptops and other digital devices damages vision and can speed up blindness. Research by the University of Toledo in the US has revealed that prolonged exposure to blue light triggers poisonous molecules to be generated in the eye’s light-sensitive cells that can cause macular degeneration – an incurable condition that affects the middle part of vision.”
My S7 has a blue light filter and I am experimenting with it. Apple calls their blue light filter Night Shift.
2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Driven: Longer, Lighter, More Fuel Efficient, and Extremely Refined
Base price, I repeat BASE PRICE is $30,000, for a fracking Work Truck.

Supposedly the Samsung flagship phone.
Security patch level October 1, 2016 (I’m on Verizon).
Currently running Android Marshmellow (6.0.1).
Android Nougat final released AUGUST 22nd, 2016. Still not available for the S7.
And they wonder why people are switching to iPhones and hackers make fun of Android security.
