Stuff I bookmarked recently. Some off topic, some not:

Exclusive: Veterans want answers as new data shows rise in cancers over two decades of war
“Veterans saw a spike in urinary, prostate, liver and blood cancers during nearly two decades of war, and some military families now question whether their exposure to toxic environments is to blame, according to a McClatchy investigation.”
Well let’s see. I was in the Gulf War. The sky was black from burning oil wells the entire time I was there. For a month we had “burn pits” going every day. My shot record is a mile long including the anthrax vaccine and god knows what else what they actually injected us with. I remember when I was stationed in Germany we got alerted for possible emergency deployment to another continent. They lined us up and gave us 1/2 a dozen shots. Most were with the jetgun (vets you know what I’m talking about). I remember it vividly because our unit veterinarian also doubled as our medic (short on personnel because of budget cuts). At some point in the middle of this, this individual passed out face first into the gym floor. None of those shots ever made it into our shot records. Anyway, I digress.
If you’re a vet or love one you should read this.

Michigan man sentenced in toss of rock off overpass that killed vehicle passenger
I discussed this here: https://www.tweakhound.com/2017/10/24/rock-dropping-punks/
“A 19-year-old from Michigan — who was the oldest suspect in a group that threw a large rock off of an overpass, killing a man — was sentenced Tuesday to serve between 39 months and 20 years in prison, according to reports.
Kyle Anger pleaded guilty to second-degree murder after dropping a six-pound rock from an overpass in Vienna Township, about 80 miles north of Detroit, in October 2017.
Prosecutors said Anger threw the rock that smashed through a truck’s windshield and killed 32-year-old Kenneth White, who was a passenger in the car on his way home from work.
”
WTF kinda sentence is that? The family of the victim is understandably upset.
“A young man was taken from a family, a loving, caring family and he was a loving, caring, compassionate person and now his son has to grow up, his daughter has to grow up…without him,” said Simpson. “Where is the fairness here? 39 months for murder…This is a great injustice. This is a slap in my face. This is a slap in my son’s face.”

The Link Between Diet, Exercise and Alzheimer’s
Paywalled
“Among healthy patients, people who made changes in nutrition and exercise showed cognitive improvements on average. People who were already experiencing some memory problems also showed cognitive improvement—if they followed at least 60% of the recommended changes.
It’s unclear whether the lifestyle changes can actually help prevent the development of Alzheimer’s disease, or simply improve cognition
Here are some of the lifestyle changes that Dr. Richard Isaacson, director of the Alzheimer’s Prevention Clinic at Weill Cornell Medicine and NewYork Presbyterian, says might help improve your cognitive abilities, depending on your body type and medical profile. Patients should consult a doctor before taking any steps.
*Eat a half-cup of blueberries and strawberries two to three times a week.
*Eat two to three servings per week of wild fish, which are high in Omega-3 fatty acids.
*Add powdered cocoa flavanols to coffee, smoothies or skim milk.
*Practice good sleep hygiene: Sleep at least 7.5 hours a day, avoid caffeinated drinks after 1 p.m., go to bed and wake up at the same time every day, and avoid electronics, texting and email 30-45 minutes before bed.
*Exercise at least three times a week with a mix of aerobic and resistance/weight training.
*Have one tablespoon of extra-virgin olive oil daily.
*Cut back on sugar and carbohydrates and look for whole grains and foods with high amounts of fiber.
*Play a musical instrument.
*Learn something new, such as a foreign language.
*Minimize stress through activities like meditation.”

Stuff I bookmarked recently. Some off topic, some not:

Uh-oh: Silicon Valley is building a Chinese-style social credit system
“Many Westerners are disturbed by what they read about China’s social credit system. But such systems, it turns out, are not unique to China. A parallel system is developing in the United States, in part as the result of Silicon Valley and technology-industry user policies, and in part by surveillance of social media activity by private companies.”

The spy in your wallet: Credit cards have a privacy problem
“I recently used my credit card to buy a banana. Then I tried to figure out how my credit card let companies buy me.
You might think my 29-cent swipe at Target would be just between me and my bank. Heavens, no. My banana generated data that’s probably worth more than the banana itself. It ended up with marketers, Target, Amazon, Google and hedge funds, to name a few.
”

Verizon to enable spam call filtering by default on select Android phones
“Verizon says that calls from numbers that have been reported as fraudulent will be automatically blocked, while other numbers will generate a “potential spam” warning message on the incoming call screen. Calls from known contacts will be unaffected. Users also have the option of blocking all international calls if the only ones they receive are spam.”

Macrium Reflect Updated Pulled?
v7.2.4398 was momentarily released last week. Not there anymore. No statement from the company on this.

Stuff I bookmarked recently. Some off topic, some not:

CafePress Hacked, 23M Accounts Compromised. Is Yours One Of Them?
“According to that HIBP notification, the breach itself took place on Feb 20 and compromised a total of 23,205,290 accounts. The exposed data included 23 million unique email addresses; some of the compromised records also included names, physical addresses and phone numbers…Why has it taken so long to find out about the CafePress breach? Good question. An equally good one might be “why have I heard about this breach from HIBP and not CafePress itself?” of course…There have been no notification emails from CafePress as far as I can ascertain.”

81 of the Best Barrel aged Imperial Stouts, Blind-Tasted and Ranked
IMHO missing a bunch. Isn’t that the case with all such lists?

Good for Google, Bad for America
“At its core, artificial intelligence is a military technology. Why is the company sharing it with a rival?
“A.I.’s military power is the simple reason that the recent behavior of America’s leading software company, Google — starting an A.I. lab in China while ending an A.I. contract with the Pentagon — is shocking. As President Barack Obama’s defense secretary Ash Carter pointed out last month, “If you’re working in China, you don’t know whether you’re working on a project for the military or not.”
No intensive investigation is required to confirm this. All one need do is glance at the Communist Party of China’s own constitution: Xi Jinping added the principle of “civil-military fusion,” which mandates that all research done in China be shared with the People’s Liberation Army, in 2017.
”

These scientists may have solved MLB’s ‘juiced’ baseball problem
“Within a matter of weeks, according to Smith and Nathan, MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred could be ready to present the research findings and explain what has caused the baseballs to drive up the home run totals — not to mention fuel conspiracy theorists who have accused the league of juicing up the balls.”
This should make my home boy Justin Verlander happy.: Justin Verlander Says MLB Is Juicing Baseballs To Goose Up Offense
“It’s a f—-ing joke. Major League Baseball’s turning this game into a joke. They own Rawlings, and you’ve got Manfred up here saying it might be the way they center the pill. They own the f—-ing company. If any other $40 billion company bought out a $400 million company and the product changed dramatically, it’s not a guess as to what happened. We all know what happened. Manfred the first time he came in, what’d he say? He said we want more offense. All of a sudden he comes in, the balls are juiced? It’s not coincidence. We’re not idiots.”
Asked if he believed the balls were intentionally juiced by the league, Verlander said: “Yes. 100 percent. They’ve been using juiced balls in the Home Run Derby forever. They know how to do it. It’s not coincidence. I find it really hard to believe that Major League Baseball owns Rawlings and just coincidentally the balls become juiced.

Monday Random Stuff…

June 10, 2019, 16:23(EDT) By Eric (a.k.a. TweakHound)

Patch Tueday is tomorrow.
As I’ve said before I’m currently running Win10 1903 on my main rig. Everything is OK with the exception that networking on my VMs doesn’t work sometimes. The only fix is to reboot. 1903 certainly hasn’t made my computing experience any better.

Stuff I bookmarked recently. Some off topic, some not:

Fewer kids are riding and buying bicycles, and the industry is worried
“The number of children ages 6 to 17 who rode bicycles regularly — more than 25 times a year — decreased by more than a million from 2014 to 2018, according to the Sports & Fitness Industry Association. That includes both casual rides around the neighborhood and more serious cycling for fitness or competition…Youth fitness activists and sporting goods market analysts are in agreement about what’s been keeping kids off bikes. The primary culprit, they say, is screen time, whether on phones, televisions or video games. A 2018 study from the American Heart Association found kids and teens ages 8 to 18 averaged more than seven hours a day looking at screens.”
One thing I really noticed down at the beach few weeks ago. Too many Americans of all ages are fat. I don’t mean a couple of pounds. I mean dozens to hundreds of pounds. Sad.

A TV meteorologist who objected on air to management’s ‘code red’ orders might be out of a job
“The reason? Crain criticized Sinclair Broadcast Group’s initiative to implement mandatory “code red” days in their affiliates’ forecasts. Meteorologists at local stations under Sinclair’s auspices are encouraged – or at times, forced – into declaring code red days, the decision often made by management. And during Wednesday morning’s broadcast, Crain had had enough.”
I’m tired of that crap. The most popular station around here is NBC12 and they have “First Alert Weather Days” all the fracking time. You twatwaffeles in the weather biz are crying wolf too much and you’re gonna get someone killed.

Win10 1903, Are You Ready?

May 13, 2019, 08:12(EDT) By Eric (a.k.a. TweakHound)

Windows 10 May 2019 Update
Win10 1903 brings several changes, most of which the average user won’t care about. Two changes of note are supposed increased performance and improved control of Windows Update. The best breakdown I’ve seen to date is:
Neowin – The Windows 10 May 2019 Update is coming – here’s what’s new

Release Date
– “Official” date unknown at this time. “End of May” often quoted. Expect it somewhere between tomorrow and hell freezing over.
– ISOs are floating around now

Blocking 1903
– Easy way: Use O&O ShutUp10
See also: Windows Update section of the Tweak Guide.
(1903 will bring major changes to this.)

Preparing for 1903
– Update all your apps and drivers.
– Backup everything. Make a system image. I use the free Macrium Reflect. This is also a good time to backup everything else.
See also: Windows 10 Backup And Recovery Options

My Recommendation
– Put off installing 1903 at least one month.
– Better safe than sorry. Microsoft will, at some point, state that 1903 is “safe for business”. The October 2018 Update was declared safe on March 28th, 2019.

Tweaking Windows 10
It will be at least a month after release before the Win10 Tweak Guide is updated.

I’ve been sick for almost a month. A sinus infection turned into acute bronchitis because the inept doctors at my local urgent care center wouldn’t prescribe an antibiotic when it was obvious I needed it. I’ve been on doxycycline hyclate (antibiotic) and prednisone (steroid to help breathing) for several days now. I haven’t been focusing well. Here at TweakHound.com some misspelling and general rambling have ensued and I apologize. I’m gonna take a few days off. I might head up towards the mountains and hit a few breweries.

Office Depot And Partner Ordered To Pay $35 Million For Tricking Consumers Into Thinking They Had Malware
“Consumers have a hard enough time protecting their computers from malware, viruses, and other threats,” said FTC Chairman Joe Simons. “This case should send a strong message to companies that they will face stiff consequences if they use deception to trick consumers into buying costly services they may not need.”
LOL. The ENTIRE industry uses those tactics.

25 Years Later: Interview with Linus Torvalds
I didn’t find the interview interesting until this:
But, I absolutely detest modern “social media”—Twitter, Facebook, Instagram. It’s a disease. It seems to encourage bad behavior.
I think part of it is something that email shares too, and that I’ve said before: “On the internet, nobody can hear you being subtle”. When you’re not talking to somebody face to face, and you miss all the normal social cues, it’s easy to miss humor and sarcasm, but it’s also very easy to overlook the reaction of the recipient, so you get things like flame wars, etc., that might not happen as easily with face-to-face interaction…
Add in anonymity, and it’s just disgusting. When you don’t even put your real name on your garbage (or the garbage you share or like), it really doesn’t help.
I’m actually one of those people who thinks that anonymity is overrated. Some people confuse privacy and anonymity and think they go hand in hand, and that protecting privacy means that you need to protect anonymity. I think that’s wrong. Anonymity is important if you’re a whistle-blower, but if you cannot prove your identity, your crazy rant on some social-media platform shouldn’t be visible, and you shouldn’t be able to share it or like it.

People need to wake up to dangers of AI, warns Google ethics adviser
“AI is the single most disruptive force that humanity has ever encountered and my concern is that so much of the discussion that we hear about now is very incremental,” said De Kai, a professor at the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, in an interview this week. “We are near an era when people can easily produce weapons such as fleets of armed AI drones … the cat is out of the bag.”
I would put the odds at better than even AI will be our undoing. I dunno, maybe I’m just in a mood.

Ex-Mozilla CTO: US border cops demanded I unlock my phone, laptop at SF airport – and I’m an American citizen
“On this trip, the kiosk directed me to a Customs and Border Patrol agent who kept my passport and sent me to secondary inspection,” Gal said. “There I quickly found myself surrounded by three armed agents wearing bullet proof vests. They started to question me aggressively regarding my trip, my current employment, and my past work for Mozilla, a non-profit organization dedicated to open technology and online privacy.”
I don’t fly much. Don’t care if I ever do again. Folks making comments on this article talk about burner phones and laptops for travel…
