Back From Vacation In West Virginia

July 3rd – Stayed at Snowshoe, West Virginia. Did a few runs down the mountain on my mountain bike. Saw a couple of deer here. Apparently they are very used to people. See video below. FYI – No cell signal for 24 hours. Don’t rely of your phone for navigation in this area. Apparently only AT&T works around here and then only in a few spots.

July 4th – Biked a 25 mile section of Greenbrier River Trail from Cass to Marlington (Google Map). Parked in Marlington. Got breakfast and packed a lunch made by Dirt Bean Cafe. Great food and nice people. Took a shuttle provided by Appalachian Sport up to Cass so we could ride one way. Drove to Adventures on the Gorge in Lansing, WV where we stayed for 2 nights. We stayed in the Sunnyside Suite.
Though much of the ride is shaded it was hot and humid with heat indexes in the upper 90s. The 2 of us drank over 4 liters of water.
I have the CamelBak Adult M.U.L.E. Mil Spec Antidote Hydration Backpack. I removed the bite valve so I can just pour the water into our water bottles.

July 5th – Rafting the Lower New River. No pics this year as I didn’t wanna pay for them. Here is a pic from last year: https://www.tweakhound.com/2017/07/11/patch-tuesday-23/th_nr_wva_2017/

July 6th – Did the Bridge Walk before heading home. You walk the catwalk under the New River Gorge Bridge. Very cool. 876 feet high and people base jump off this thing on Bridge Day.

This deer was at the base of Snowshoe Mountain, West Virginia. The folks there tell me you can feed some of them from your hand.

Over It
That Win10 update that never got released? The one “they” say will be called “”April Update”? Now “they” say it will be released in May. Oh, and it might also be 1804 instead of 1803. I think we are all over it at this point.

Anandtech ran some benchies.

Windows Performance Impact Of Meltdown And Spectre

January 9, 2018, 15:19(EST) By Eric (a.k.a. TweakHound)

win10_logo

Microsoft exec Terry Myerson lays out what he expects the performance impact of the Meltdown/Spectre patches.
– With Windows 10 on newer silicon (2016-era PCs with Skylake, Kabylake or newer CPU), benchmarks show single-digit slowdowns, but we don’t expect most users to notice a change because these percentages are reflected in milliseconds.
TH – Skylake released 2015. Kaby Lake 2016.
– With Windows 10 on older silicon (2015-era PCs with Haswell or older CPU), some benchmarks show more significant slowdowns, and we expect that some users will notice a decrease in system performance.
TH – Haswell released 2013.
– With Windows 8 and Windows 7 on older silicon (2015-era PCs with Haswell or older CPU), we expect most users to notice a decrease in system performance.
TH – Haswell released 2013
– Windows Server on any silicon, especially in any IO-intensive application, shows a more significant performance impact when you enable the mitigations to isolate untrusted code within a Windows Server instance. This is why you want to be careful to evaluate the risk of untrusted code for each Windows Server instance, and balance the security versus performance tradeoff for your environment.
TH – You’re attached to another object by an incline plane wrapped helically around an axis.

Conveniently left out is any reference to Microsoft bricking AMD machines.
I will repeat my advice to not update Windows machines right now. Certainly you need to have a full image backup before you do.
I recommend Macrium Reflect 7 Free Edition.

To find your CPU family.
Those odd names are CPU Family or CPU Code Names (Haswell, Skylake, Kabylake…).
Download Speccy PORTABLE and run it.
Click the CPU tab. Find the line Code Name, that is your CPU family.
