AMD Spectre Mitigation Update

April 10, 2018, 14:23(EDT) By Eric (a.k.a. TweakHound)

windows security

“Today, AMD is providing updates regarding our recommended mitigations for Google Project Zero (GPZ) Variant 2 (Spectre) for Microsoft Windows users. These mitigations require a combination of processor microcode updates from our OEM and motherboard partners, as well as running the current and fully up-to-date version of Windows. For Linux users, AMD recommended mitigations for GPZ Variant 2 were made available to our Linux partners and have been released to distribution earlier this year…
Microsoft is releasing an operating system update containing Variant 2 (Spectre) mitigations for AMD users running Windows 10 (version 1709) today. Support for these mitigations for AMD processors in Windows Server 2016 is expected to be available following final validation and testing.
In addition, microcode updates with our recommended mitigations addressing Variant 2 (Spectre) have been released to our customers and ecosystem partners for AMD processors dating back to the first “Bulldozer” core products introduced in 2011.
AMD customers will be able to install the microcode by downloading BIOS updates provided by PC and server manufacturers and motherboard providers. Please check with your provider for the latest updates.

New report: Microsoft To Ban ‘Offensive Language’ & Monitor Your Private Account
“According to a new services agreement written by the company, the tech giant is planning to ban accounts that use “offensive language” and will go through your private data to “investigate” users.
In a March 1 release, Microsoft is warning customers using Office, Xbox, Skype, and other products that the company is prohibiting offensive language and inappropriate content starting on May 1. “Don’t publicly display or use the Services to share inappropriate content or material (involving, for example, nudity, bestiality, pornography, offensive language, graphic violence, or criminal activity),” Microsoft warns in a portion of their new codes of conduct.
”
Sit back and break out the popcorn, this should get interesting. Wonder how long it takes for the fanbois to break out the, “everyone else is doing it” excuse?

Cicerone Certified Beer Server

March 3, 2018, 09:57(EST) By Eric (a.k.a. TweakHound)

This is how I studied for and passed the Cicerone Certified Beer Server exam. I am not “in the industry”, I’m just a Geek who loves craft beer. My goal was to actually learn and not only study to the exam itself. Toward that end, if all you want to do is pass the exam then much of the info below will most likely be overkill for you.

Patch Tuesday

I’m not patching. See the previous post: Patch Tuesday, Part 1 as to why.

Windows 10: February 13, 2018—KB4074588 (OS Build 16299.248)

Warning – Windows 7 Users, KB2952664 Is Back
It has been moved to “Important” again. We Geeks don’t like it because it is telemetry related.

Craft Beer

February 4, 2018, 11:48(EST) By Eric (a.k.a. TweakHound)

beerglass

If you’ve hung around here for a while you know I’m in to craft beer. Yelp says I’ve checked in to 45 breweries in the last 2 years.

I’ve decided to learn more about this whole craft beer thing. Lately I have:
– Taken: P’s & Q’s: An Introduction to Craft Beer course, offered by the VCU Office of Continuing and Professional Education.
– This morning I got my Beer 101 Certificate (took less than an hour)
– I’m on Chapter 9 of Tasting Beer, 2nd Edition: An Insider’s Guide to the World’s Greatest Drink

Next up is the Cicerone Certified Beer Server exam.

Not sure where I’m headed with this. Maybe I will try and sling some beers at a local brewery and see if I fit in to the craft beer culture.

Anyone out there into craft beer? Anything to share? Got any tips or advice?

windows security

Unless you are a masochist you shouldn’t be updating any Windows machine today. The only updates seems to be the typically Window Defender stuff, .Net updates and a Flash update for IE and Edge. Y’all are too smart to be using that garbage anyway 😉
Office Updates are available. See here to update from within Office:

Stupid, antisocial, and unhealthy
“A decade ago, smart devices promised to change the way we think and interact, and they have – but not by making us smarter…The lesson we’re slowly beginning to learn, though, is that they’re not a harmless vice. Used the way we currently use them, smartphones keep us from being our best selves.”
I am amazed at the ubiquity of constant cell phone use. I watch people on the road texting, speed fluctuating, drifting into to other lanes. I watch groups of young people at a table, all on their phones, no one talking. I watch children on phones and tablets, oblivious to the world around them.
Sad. Truly sad.
