Reader ‘hsantos’ asked: “Any recommendation for a mp3 player… other than Winamp… less memory hungry?”
Winamp isn’t “memory hungry” if you do a minimal install…
I use Winamp as a ‘quick player’ for listening to mp3’s and wav’s. I don’t actually use it as my audio player (I use iTunes under windows for that). Here is how I install it:
Download Winamp Lite from Major Geeks.
When installing UNcheck:
-Winamp Agent
-CD Playback and extraction (if you aren’t going to use it)
-User Interface Extensions
-Visualization
-Languages (only install the language you use)
Make sure you uncheck all the garbage in the following screes (remote, toolbar, emusic, etc.)
Winamp Setup:
-Winamp will try and enable the Winamp Agent again, uncheck it.
-Deselect all audio files you don’t want associated with Winamp. I only have mp3 and wav checked.
-Uncheck Video Files
-Uncheck “Yes, allow anonymous usage statistics (recommended).”
On First Start:
Under General Preferences, uncheck “Check for new versions of Winamp on startup.”
As you can see in this screenshot, Winamp Lite 5.51.1741 Beta is using 9.5 megabytes of memory.
