Random Musings…

October 19, 2007, 14:32(EDT) By Eric (a.k.a. TweakHound)

If you aren’t into Ubuntu it’s been a rather slow week for PC users. I’ve been continuing my setup of openSUSE 10.3, installing Ubuntu 7.10 on one machine and doing an upgrade on another. BTW, does anyone know what the problem is at KDE-Look? I haven’t been able to access that site in quite some time.
You know, if I have to see one more lame-butt ‘is Linux ready for the desktop’ article I think I’m gonna have a conniption. Yes, Linux is ready for the desktop, if you have the nads to learn a new OS.
The big news for me this week is that I ditched Comcast broadband and got Verizon FIOS. All I can say is WOOOOHOOOOO!!! It also seems that the original story of Comcast monkeying with downloads may be true after all.
I would like to send a big ‘atta-boy’ to whomever does the Mozilla updates at openSUSE. Before I read about Firefox being updated anywhere on the net, Firefox 2.0.0.8 was on the openSUSE servers! I checked for updates via SMART and, ‘what the, 2.0.0.8?‘ so I scooted over to the FF home page and sure enough…

Anywho…I hope you have an awesome weekend!
Eric

Windows Home Server in depth

October 15, 2007, 17:36(EDT) By Eric (a.k.a. TweakHound)

OK, I completely do not get why someone would want to use this product and this review does absolutely nothing to change my mind. In fact it just hardens my belief that it’s a waste of money. Anywho…

When Microsoft announced Windows Home Server earlier this year, it was greeted with a mixture of curious disdain and eagerness. Some questioned what the product offered over existing solutions, while others welcomed it with open arms. It’s at once hard to explain and easy to understand what Windows Home Server is, but it’s worth getting to know the newest addition to the Windows family.

Upgrading to Ubuntu 7.10 now, before the rush

October 15, 2007, 17:28(EDT) By Eric (a.k.a. TweakHound)

I usually don’t upgrade an OS but I saw this on Digg and figured I would give it a shot, just for the heck of it.

When Ubuntu’s Gutsy Gibbon (7.10) is released on Thrusday there will be a mad rush to download updates and ISOs from Ubuntu’s servers. This article will explain various ways to upgrade to the latest and greatest by avoiding to download rush.
