Disable 8.3 Filename Support Article In 2026

October 7, 2026, 13:32(EDT) By Eric (a.k.a. TweakHound) Leave a Comment

I’m at home for a few days recovering from a medical procedure. Bored and unmotivated I’ve been doing a lot of web surfing. I’m not sure what the point of this post is.

I ran into this article: Windows’ legacy 8.3 filename support actually negatively affects performance
Which led here: Microsoft warns against disabling Windows legacy feature that can unlock huge performance
Which used a Reddit thread as a news source: https://www.reddit.com/r/windows/comments/1wn5486/8dotname_was_the_root_cause_of_laggy_exploring/
So I’m curious, geeks have been disabling 8.3 filename support since Windows XP. Every tweak guide I’ve ever done has this tweak. You can see this via the Internet Wayback Machine of the XP Tweak Guide in February of 2003:
https://web.archive.org/web/20030206145743/http://www.tweakhound.com/xp/xptweaks/supertweaks5.htm
(Geeze, I’ve been at this a while…)

What is an 8.3 Filename? (Wikipedia)
“An 8.3 filename (also called a short filename or SFN) is one that obeys the filename convention used by CP/M and old versions of DOS and versions of Microsoft Windows prior to Windows 95 and Windows NT 3.5. It is also used in modern Microsoft operating systems as an alternate filename to the long filename, to provide compatibility with legacy programs…This legacy technology is used in a wide range of products and devices, as a standard for interchanging information, such as compact flash cards used in cameras. VFAT LFN long filenames introduced by Windows 95/98/ME retained compatibility, but the VFAT LFN used on NT-based systems (Windows NT/2K/XP) uses a modified 8.3 shortname.”
Oversimplified, legacy support for DOS files.

Microsoft has been issuing guidance on this for years:
Microsoft: How to Disable the 8.3 Name Creation on NTFS Partitions

The Neowin Article
I don’t blame to Redditor for his question. It’s legit question and as one reply to his question said, “Why Windows 11 still comes with 8.3 file names is beyond me.”
I’m just not understanding the need for this clickbait “Warning” article in 2026. It is literally decades old news.
I dunno, maybe I’m just an old Gen X’er shouting at kids to get off his lawn.
