I would like to thank Firebirds Wood Fired Grill for treating my Dad and I to dinner. They had a buy-one-get-one offer for Vets yesterday. There were 3 of us (2 Vets) and they bought me and my Dad’s meals without us asking (which I wouldn’t have).

Win10 1903 Stuff

Win10 1903 Stuff
I rarely re-post Windows changes and known issues. Microsoft posts this and we’re all most of us are literate adults. As such you don’t need me or anyone else regurgitating this for you.
Windows 10 release information: has “Known issues and notifications” and “Resolved issues” of every Win10 version.

Windows lifecycle fact sheet – “The lifecycle begins when a product is released and ends when it’s no longer supported.”

Windows 10 and reserved storage
“Starting with the next major update we’re making a few changes to how Windows 10 manages disk space. Through reserved storage, some disk space will be set aside to be used by updates, apps, temporary files, and system caches. Our goal is to improve the day-to-day function of your PC by ensuring critical OS functions always have access to disk space. Without reserved storage, if a user almost fills up her or his storage, several Windows and application scenarios become unreliable.”

I’m running 1903 now. I did a manual update. Seems OK. Better than my attempt a couple of weeks ago.
Is anyone using the Your Phone app with their Android. Is this app a POS or is it just not working for well for my Galaxy S7? Messages send after a while, no receive, photos don’t show…

Stuff I bookmarked recently. Some off topic, some not:

The Performance Impact Of MDS / Zombieload Plus The Overall Cost Now Of Spectre/Meltdown/L1TF/MDS
If looking at the geometric mean for the tests run today, the Intel systems all saw about 16% lower performance out-of-the-box now with these default mitigations and obviously even lower if disabling Hyper Threading for maximum security. The two AMD systems tested saw a 3% performance hit with the default mitigations. While there are minor differences between the systems to consider, the mitigation impact is enough to draw the Core i7 8700K much closer to the Ryzen 7 2700X and the Core i9 7980XE to the Threadripper 2990WX.

5G Danger: Hundreds Of Respected Scientists Sound The Alarm About Health Effects As 5G Networks Go Up Nationwide
Today, there is a growing body of scientific evidence that indicates that the electromagnetic radiation that we are constantly being bombarded with is not good for us. Hundreds of scientists that are engaged in research in this area have signed the “International EMF Scientist Appeal”

Processed Foods Can Make You Gain Weight: Study
During the first 14 days, half of the participants ate what was called an “ultra-processed diet,” which consisted of foods such as chicken salad with canned chicken, turkey bacon, sweetened Greek yogurt, baked potato chips, and bagels with cream cheese.
The other half of the group was given a minimally processed diet, which consisted of whole fruits and vegetables, meat and fish, nuts, oatmeal, and eggs. After 14 days, the participants switched diets.
The results were that people who ate processed foods gained 2 pounds while those who ate minimally processed food lost 2 pounds.

Even government guideline amounts of red meat and bacon increase risk of bowel cancer, study finds
Eating a bacon sandwich, beef or sausages on just four days a week significantly increases the risk bowel cancer, despite being well within government dietary guidelines, experts have warned.
Y’all just ain’t gonna let me enjoy my bacon cheeseburger are you?

US cosmetics are full of chemicals banned by Europe – why?
A long list of potentially harmful ingredients banned in the EU are legally allowed in the US due to historically relaxed regulations…The disparity in standards between the EU and US has grown to the extent it touches almost every element of most Americans’ lives. In cosmetics alone, the EU has banned or restricted more than 1,300 chemicals while the US has outlawed or curbed just 11.

Well…kinda sorta…
Saw over at Neowin that some people have 1903 showing up via “check for update”. Not for me. All I had was May 21, 2019—KB4497934 (OS Build OS 17763.529). 1903 is available for download:

Meltdown Redux: Intel Flaw Lets Hackers Siphon Secrets from Millions of PCs
researchers have uncovered yet another flaw in the deepest guts of Intel’s microscopic hardware. This time, it can allow attackers to eavesdrop on virtually every bit of raw data that a victim’s processor touches.
Today Intel and a coordinated supergroup of microarchitecture security researchers are together announcing a new, serious form of hackable vulnerability in Intel’s chips. It’s four distinct attacks, in fact, though all of them use a similar technique, and all are capable of siphoning a stream of potentially sensitive data from a computer’s CPU to an attacker.

Microsoft warns wormable Windows bug could lead to another WannaCry
Microsoft is warning that the Internet could see another exploit with the magnitude of the WannaCry attack that shut down computers all over the world two years ago unless people patch a high-severity vulnerability. The software maker took the unusual step of backporting the just-released patch for Windows 2003 and XP, which haven’t been supported in four and five years, respectively.

Win10 1903, Are You Ready?

May 13, 2019, 08:12(EDT) By Eric (a.k.a. TweakHound)

Windows 10 May 2019 Update
Win10 1903 brings several changes, most of which the average user won’t care about. Two changes of note are supposed increased performance and improved control of Windows Update. The best breakdown I’ve seen to date is:
Neowin – The Windows 10 May 2019 Update is coming – here’s what’s new

Release Date
– “Official” date unknown at this time. “End of May” often quoted. Expect it somewhere between tomorrow and hell freezing over.
– ISOs are floating around now

Blocking 1903
– Easy way: Use O&O ShutUp10
See also: Windows Update section of the Tweak Guide.
(1903 will bring major changes to this.)

Preparing for 1903
– Update all your apps and drivers.
– Backup everything. Make a system image. I use the free Macrium Reflect. This is also a good time to backup everything else.
See also: Windows 10 Backup And Recovery Options

My Recommendation
– Put off installing 1903 at least one month.
– Better safe than sorry. Microsoft will, at some point, state that 1903 is “safe for business”. The October 2018 Update was declared safe on March 28th, 2019.

Tweaking Windows 10
It will be at least a month after release before the Win10 Tweak Guide is updated.
