Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp go DOWN worldwide for FOUR hours and counting in catastrophic outage – as experts suggest internal error is to blame and staff ‘are locked out of offices’
Every news outlet is reporting on this. From what I can tell it’s a DNS issue. There are reports of Twitter and Gmail being down for some. I can reach both fine. My webhost seems to be having issues too.
#DeleteFacebook was trending on Twitter today. You know, because Twitter is such a positive benefit to society.

‘Babylon 5’ Reboot in Development at The CW From Original Series Creator J. Michael Straczynski
“The new iteration of the sci-fi series is described as a “from-the-ground-up reboot.” In the series, John Sheridan, an Earthforce officer with a mysterious background, is assigned to Babylon 5, a five-mile-long space station in neutral space, a port of call for travelers, smugglers, corporate explorers and alien diplomats at a time of uneasy peace and the constant threat of war. His arrival triggers a destiny beyond anything he could have imagined, as an exploratory Earth company accidentally triggers a conflict with a civilization a million years ahead of us, putting Sheridan and the rest of the B5 crew in the line of fire as the last, best hope for the survival of the human race.”

One of my favorite sci-fi series. If you haven’t seen it you owe it to yourself to watch.
It pops up from time to time on streaming services. I have the Babylon 5: The Complete Series with Movies 10pk DVD Set (“Only 20 left in stock – order soon“).

Office Zero-Day
Both “Premium” Paul Thurrott and Neowin has said “Microsoft acknowledges” this vulnerability which Bleeping Computer reminds us:
“However, the attack is thwarted if Microsoft Office runs with the default configuration, where documents from the web are opened in Protected View mode or Application Guard for Office 365.”

ProtonMail removed “we do not keep any IP logs” from its privacy policy
“This weekend, news broke that security/privacy-focused anonymous email service ProtonMail turned over a French climate activist’s IP address and browser fingerprint to Swiss authorities. This move seemingly ran counter to the well-known service’s policies, which as recently as last week stated that “by default, we do not keep any IP logs which can be linked to your anonymous email account.”
Steve Gibson talks about this: “Internet Anonymity” is an Oxymoron

I Got My Metallica (Remastered) Today

Stuff I bookmarked recently. Some off topic, some not:

Bosses turn to ‘tattleware’ to keep tabs on employees working from home
“Every minute or so, the program would capture a live photo of David and his workmates via their company laptop webcams. The ever-changing headshots were splayed across the wall of a digital conference waiting room that everyone on the team could see…These software programs give bosses a mix of options for monitoring workers’ online activity and assessing their productivity: from screenshotting employees’ screens to logging their keystrokes and tracking their browsing. But in the fast-growing bossware market, each platform potentially brings something new to the table. There’s FlexiSpy, which offers call-tapping; Spytech, which is known for mobile device access; and NetVizor, which has a remote takeover feature…Employers are reportedly drawing on in-house IT departments to monitor emails for flagged phrases at an increased rate compared with before the pandemic. By receiving alerts when certain employees are discussing “recruiter” or “salary”, for example, management hopes to know when employees are looking to up sticks for greener pastures.”

How Facebook Undermines Privacy Protections for Its 2 Billion WhatsApp Users
“WhatsApp has more than 1,000 contract workers filling floors of office buildings in Austin, Texas, Dublin and Singapore, where they examine millions of pieces of users’ content. Seated at computers in pods organized by work assignments, these hourly workers use special Facebook software to sift through streams of private messages, images and videos that have been reported by WhatsApp users as improper and then screened by the company’s artificial intelligence systems.”

Posted just for FYI. Not to be rude but I don’t care what your opinion is on this topic.

Software I Use – 2021 Edition

August 30, 2021, 16:47(EDT) By Eric (a.k.a. TweakHound)

A while back someone asked me to do a freeware guide for Windows 10 like I have for other Windows operating systems. My heart wasn’t in it. While there is excellent free software out there, in many cases you get what you pay for. I’m tired of talking about second best software I don’t use. So below is a list of the software I have installed on at least one of the 8 PC’s I have scattered across my house.

July 2021 Vacation Pics, Vids, And Info

July 16, 2021, 13:06(EDT) By Eric (a.k.a. TweakHound)

Our vacation was July 5th -12th, 2021. We traveled from Virginia to Marquette, Michigan with stops at other Michigan locals along the way. We put about 2,700 miles on our vehicle.
This posts contains an image gallery and 3 videos. I used a GoPro Hero 8 and it was my first shot at that and mass video editing so cut me some slack.
This page is VERY large.

VIDEOS: ‘Panic buying’ means long lines at gas pumps in Virginia and North Carolina
I had posted a pic of my nearest gas station being out of gas yesterday. I got it at Wawa a few miles away. Now look at what’s happening. There are pics out there of folks hoarding gas in multiple portable containers, fights, and worse. Many places have gas but the lines are ridiculously long. Some are calling it a “panic”. I guess there is some of that but hell, people still gotta get to work.
