Stuff I bookmarked recently. Some off topic, some not:

30th Anniversary of Desert Storm
This is just a shout-out to my fellow DS vets. It was a honor to serve with you brothers and sisters.

Lonnie Dillard Obituary (1945 – 2021)
“9. Happiness is not the result of what does or does not happen to you in your life as much as your attitude about what does or does not happen. It’s a decision you make. Every day. They say that it is always better to have ten items on a list than only nine. I say trying to do everything “they” say can snuff out whatever genius you have in you, as well as make you miserable in the process. There is no one more you than you. You do have something unique to offer your piece of the world. Damn convention or the critics. Take a chance! Unfortunately, I did not know all these lessons all my life; some I paid very dearly to learn. Or re-learn.”
I did not know nor had I ever heard about him until today and his obit went viral. I wish I had. Rest in peace kind sir.

Behind a Secret Deal Between Google and Facebook
“This idea that the major tech platforms are robustly competing against each other is very much overstated,” said Sally Hubbard, a former assistant attorney general in New York’s antitrust bureau who now works at Open Markets Institute, a think tank. “In many ways, they reinforce each other’s monopoly power.”
LOL, ya think?! I got $20 that says when all is said and done big tech:
– Gets a slap on the wrist to make it look like the politicians are doing something. During the “hearings” every politician there will rail against them and pontificate about a free internet. Then, come next election they will take their *ahem* “donations”.
– Other than that, completely gets way with everything and not only keeps but expands their monopiles.

theChive – Life was better when things WEREN’T connected to the internet (36 Photos)

I do not understand the need or desire for smart homes and/or smart devices everywhere.

Amazon tech workers are calling out sick in protest over COVID-19 response
“The protest is in part a result of Amazon’s aggressive response to worker organizing. In recent weeks, Amazon has fired six workers who have called for better safety precautions during the pandemic…”No company is benefiting more than Amazon right now, the stock is hitting an all-time high, and they could have also been the hero in people’s hearts, they could have set the bar high for how you treat essential workers in the time of COVID,” she says. “I really was trying to make Amazon a better company, for my kids, and for the company I worked for for 15 years.”
I want to personally thank all the Amazon employees for their exceptionally hard work during this. Y’all have come through for me, mine, and this entire country.

The Offspring – Here Kitty Kitty
Apparently this has something to do with Tiger King which I know little about. Not sure I want to. Very cool to see The Offspring doing country though. For those who don’t know, The Offspring are a punk band that rose to popularity during the mid-90’s. They’ve a number of hits but I would say my fav is “Gone Away” followed by “The Kids Aren’t Alright” (yeah, that’s a play on The Who song). Many punkers (including several old friends of mine) take to country music. “Same three chords on a different guitar at a different speed” a buddy once said to me. “Three Chords and the Truth” brother. Anywho, I digress…

Amazon soliciting public donations to pay workers’ sick leave (click “let me read it first”.)
“Isn’t it a bit unseemly for Amazon, a company owned by the richest person in the world, to be soliciting donations to pay for workers’ sick leave? Why isn’t Amazon just paying people who contracted COVID-19 while doing essential work for Amazon?”

CBS All Access is offering a free one-month trial, just in time to binge Star Trek: Picard
To take advantage of the deal, sign up for CBS All Access using the code GIFT anytime before April 23rd. As part of that process, you’ll need to create an account and give CBS a credit card to charge when the month is up; the monthly payment will automatically renew once the free trial is up.
CBS also allows you to cancel the plan immediately and still use the entire month — so you can sign up, cancel the plan immediately, and still enjoy the full free month without having to worry about remembering to cancel at the end of the trial.
To do that, head over to the CBS All Access account page, scroll down to the “Subscription” line of the “Subscription & Billing” section, and hit “Cancel Subscription.” Your account will still work for the remainder of the 30-day trial, and it will shut down at the end (unless, of course, you enjoy the content so much that you decide to pay for another month, which is likely the whole point).

*$#!^ New Yorkers react to being named ‘rudest city in America’
“Americans think New Yorkers are the biggest jerks in the country, according to a new survey — released just days before Christmas, no less.”
Many of us also think as a group you are self-important. Can’t put all the blame on you though. Every media outlet acts like life starts and stops there. The rest of us just roll our eyes at that notion. And yes, I’ve been to New York. It was summertime in the mid 80’s and the entire city smelled like urine.

Dan’s Disaster: How the Washington Redskins Plummeted to Rock Bottom
“The professional football team in the nation’s capital was the hottest ticket in town for decades. But under Dan Snyder’s ownership, the franchise has lost a lot of games and managed to alienate even some of its most dedicated fans. What made one of most unshakable fandoms in America give up on its team?”
Four of us used to go up there to one game a year and tailgate like it was our last party. That’s over now, we’ve all lost interest. I haven’t watched a full football game of any kind this year. I still root for Dallas to lose though.
