Windows 10 Home Networking Tips

As an old network guy, “TweakHound don’t do no Homegroup”. My home network is a mixed mess of Windows 7, openSUSE, Linux Mint, and Win10. These all interact via a standard Windows workgroup.
I’ve found Windows 10 workgroup networking to be a little wonky (to be kind).

Stop Dual-Booting

I get a few emails a month about dual / multi-booting, hosed bootloaders, “my X hardware doesn’t work with Z operating system”, “my X program doesn’t work with Z operating system”, etc. While I certainly understand there are folks who want direct OS/hardware interaction I believe far too many people choose to dual-boot when they don’t have to. Windows 10 Advanced Disk Cleanup

This cleanup method will create a cleanup task that you can run whenever you like. It differs from the disk cleanup utility found in your menu or search (cleanmgr) in that it has far more options.

My Printer Setup

I still do freelance computer setups for individuals and small businesses on occasion. With that comes questions about printers and recommendations for printers.
I recommend networked HP printers. That means it has Ethernet and/or wifi.
Why HP? IMHO easy setup, good drivers, full Linux support. My printer is over 8 years old and they have Windows 10 drivers for it.

Windows 7 and 8 Spying On You Too?

Ars Technica – Microsoft accused of adding spy features to Windows 7, 8
By now we are all aware that by default Win10 sends a lot of info to Microsoft. Folks have found Windows 7 & 8 are doing it too.
Well, kinda. Let me explain. Microsoft added 2 updates that collect more info.
1 – KB3022345 superseded by KB3068708 superseded by KB3080149 adds the Diagnostics Tracking Service.
2 – KB3075249 seems to monitor UAC prompts (hopefully to make it less annoying)
