Use An Ad Blocker
Online ad companies are using “browsers’ built-in login managers (also called password managers) to retrieve and exfiltrate user identifiers without user awareness.”

Fix Windows 10 Network Browsing

December 30, 2017, 12:54(EST) By Eric (a.k.a. TweakHound)

After my latest computer build, parts swapping in/out old computers, and making a new/old home server I noticed network browsing was FUBAR. I double-checked everything I could think of. Everything worked last time I checked. I did some Googling and finally came up with the answer.
Fall Creators Update broke network browsing. Surprise, surprise:

Fleetwood Mac – Rumours

December 26, 2017, 14:38(EST) By Eric (a.k.a. TweakHound)

Growing up my family didn’t have a lot of money. We weren’t poor, my hard working father saw to that. But, there wasn’t a lot of spending on extras and I didn’t ask for them…much.

My New PC – Backup

December 23, 2017, 17:02(EST) By Eric (a.k.a. TweakHound)

I do not do online backups for my OS. I use boot disks. Actually a flash drive ( My Rescue Flash Drive ).
Tried:
Acronis True Image PE Boot Disk
Macrium Reflect Windows 10 PE Boot Disk
Clonezilla Live CD

All three were successful at backup and recovery.
Acronis and Macrium both require you to install the program to create a boot disk. Macrium I don’t mind having installed. Acronis is another story. This program now installs a ton of crap on your computer not the least of which is the Bonjour Service. Yes, the same POS that Apple uses for iTunes (among other things). Many of you will remember me linking to Ed Bott’s, The unofficial guide to installing iTunes 10 without bloatware many times over the years. He says in part, “I strongly recommend not installing Bonjour unless you need it. Bonjour has required patches for security issues in the past and has been known to cause a complete loss of network connectivity on Windows networks. (Yes, I’ve seen Bonjour disable local and Internet connections on Windows networks. It was not a fun troubleshooting exercise.)”
Using Macrium Reflect I restored my PC from backup after creating the Acronis boot disk.
I’m glad I have left that nonsense behind and switched to Macrium and Clonezilla.

Bye Bye HomeGroup
“with today’s build you’ll start to see us retire the HomeGroup service.”
As an ex-network guy I never used the HomeGroup and disabling the HomeGroup Provider service is one thing I’ve always done.

Exposed, Again

Firefox Idiots
I’ve obviously been busy this last week but I did read about the Firefox Looking Glass saga. Apparently Mozilla delivered an extension without any user knowledge or consent. I say apparently because I have FF on multiple machines and VMs and I never saw it. Anyway, folks were rightfully pissed off and now Mozilla is apologizing. Stupid move bros.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi
Many Star Wars fans seem to hate The Last Jedi:
The Last Jedi Is the Most Divisive Star Wars Movie Between Fans & Critics

I enjoyed the show very much. Aside from the ridiculous Leia space flight I thought the movie was damn good. It closed the door on much of the past and opened new doors for the future. I’ll be going to see it again.

Really, really off topic.

Grisly Scene
I live in a rural area. I was coming home last Thursday night. About a mile from my house I round a corner and see a dozen police cars. The next morning this story is on the local news site. Within days the story is world wide. The gnarly details follow. If you are squeamish stop reading here…
Official story a couple of days out:
Two giant pit bulls turned on their master and killed her. Scene described as “grisly”.
Actual story:
When she was in elementary school, this woman attended the school where my wife works. Goochland, Virginia is a small county population wise. I once heard someone say, “They ain’t no secrets here.” Double negative aside it is pretty much true. I’ve known this info for days. It is official now so…
Remember my warning above. I’m serious. If you are squeamish stop reading here…
The dogs turned on her. Puncture wounds all over her body including neck and face. She was torn up bad. Really, really bad. She had been dead for a while when the police showed up. The deputies actually watched the dogs eating her. Yes. Eating her. Why they didn’t drop those animals on site I don’t understand.
FYI: Google news search for pit bull attacks.

December 17, 2017, 10:12(EST) By Eric (a.k.a. TweakHound)

th

It was time for a new desktop PC. My newest PC was put together 3 years ago out of parts that were basically 2 years old then. I haven’t had a top of the line PC since my CUSL2 system around 2000-2001. So, I decided to treat myself this time out.
