Intel’s New Kaby Lake CPU Line

January 4, 2017, 07:01(EST) By Eric (a.k.a. TweakHound)

intellogo

Intel released a new line of CPU’s. Very few in the tech enthusiast community are, well, enthused about this new lineup.
My take from the reviews, Kaby Lake is a smidge faster at stock speeds and they don’t overclock for squat.

ARSTechnica – Intel Core i7-7700K Kaby Lake review: Is the desktop CPU dead?
“With identical performance to Skylake, Intel brings desktop performance to a standstill…
As it stands, what we have with Kaby Lake desktop is effectively Sandy Bridge polished to within an inch of its life, a once-groundbreaking CPU architecture hacked, and tweaked, and mangled into ever-smaller manufacturing processes and power envelopes. Where the next major leap in desktop computing power comes from is still up for debate—but if Kaby Lake is any indication, it won’t be coming from Intel.
”

Anandtech – The Intel Core i7-7700K (91W) Review: The New Out-of-the-box Performance Champion
“In most of our benchmarks, the results are clear: a stock Core i7-7700K beat our overclocked Core i7-4790K in practically every CPU-based test (Our GPU tests showed little change). When overclocked, the i7-7700K just pushed out a bigger lead for only a few more watts. Technically one could argue that because this part and the i7-6700K are equal in IPC, a similar overclock with the i7-6700K achieves the same performance. But the crucial matter here is how lucky a user is with the silicon lottery – based on our testing, the Core i7-7700K CPUs tend to overclock rather nicely (although +300 MHz isn’t that much in the grand scheme of things).”

LegitReviews – Intel Core i7-7700K Processor Review
“For months we’ve heard people talking about how Kaby Lake is going to suck and that there is no reason to upgrade to it since it’s basically just an updated Skylake processor. We can understand that some people might look at the specifications and minor architecture changes and come to that conclusion, but the benchmark results look good. For those running older Intel Sandy Bridge or Ivy Bridge Processors the time to upgrade is looking pretty good right now…For now Intel Kaby Lake is as good as it gets for gamers and enthusiasts and we’d easily recommend it to anyone looking to upgrade their system.”

There has been controversy over Login Requirements and Nvidia sending telemetry.
Just choose custom install and don’t install GeForce Experience. You don’t need it.

And to all the websites out there that claim Nvidia isn’t spying, SHAME ON YOU. If Microsoft or the NSA were doing it you would lose your fracking minds.

SanDisk Clip Sport “Review”

September 27, 2016, 15:48(EDT) By Eric (a.k.a. TweakHound)

speaker

I only use a standalone MP3 player for working out. I’ve had an iPod Nano for some time. Nothing particularly wrong with except it is Apple and if you know me, well…
One minor annoyance is I have to keep the Nano in my pocket as the clip just doesn’t seem to do well, especially on thick edges of clothing (sweatpants and shorts). Don’t get me wrong. As much as I hate to admit it this Nano has been good to me. Especially when you factor in I got it for free. I think this was Apples best MP3 player.
I have a 6th generation iPod Nano. It was a freebie replacement for a long dead 1st generation Nano that was recalled.
So I’m midway through a hard back workout, arms shaking, trying to dig the Nano out of my pocket. That’s when I decided to look for something else.
After due consideration I decided on a SanDisk Clip Sport 8GB. I paid $37 for it on sale last week.
As a reference. The 6th gen Nano can still be had with prices ranging from $22 to a whopping $180, all used or refurb.

HP and DRM

September 27, 2016, 08:02(EDT) By Eric (a.k.a. TweakHound)

Shortly after I posted I Love HP Printers this issue came to light:
HP printers start rejecting budget ink cartridges (BBC)
“Large numbers of HP printer owners found their printers stopped recognising unofficial printer ink cartridges on 13 September.”
Basically HP purposely time-bombed/limited/eliminated the use of 3rd party ink.
Unethical but unsurprising behavior.
EFF.org has more info and a petition over this matter: Tell HP — Say No to DRM
